Almost-October Prayer Letter
Hi everyone, I’m sending my October prayer letter a little early, as you can see. This is because there are some new ministries starting in early October that need your prayers. Please read and pray! But first, some things to be thankful for…
This month I’m thankful because:
• 2 new (non-Christian) students joined my Saturday English class this past week. We now have 30...

Good News & a Prayer Request
The Good News: I got my visa extension, and it’s good for 3 more years! Thanks for praying!
The Prayer Request: Tomorrow and Monday is Chukyo Seikai — an annual retreat for the Immanuel Churches in our area. I am helping out with the youth programs with music and a testimony. Please pray for my ministry and for all involved in this event; for safe travel and changed lives.
Thanks!

Newsletter (Summer/Fall 2011)
Hey everyone,
Here’s my latest newsletter. Please download, read and pray! Also, I am in the middle of applying for my visa extension (my current one being for one year only and running out soon) so I would appreciate your prayers for that over the next week or so.

Summer Love
Prayer Letter, August 2011
Last night as I took in a Japanese festival and fireworks in nearby Toyota city, I was reminded of how much I love summer in Japan. In spite of the sometime-unbearable heat, I love the sights, sounds and events that summer brings. It’s also one of the busiest times of year for ministry.
The past month has definitely been pretty busy. Last Sunday we held our monthly...

July Prayer Letter
Dear praying friends,
March’s natural disaster has brought a lot of attention to Japan. The current deathtoll is over 20,000 people. However, there is another statistic that many people don’t know: Over 30,000 commit suicide in Japan every year. And now, this year’s natural disaster is just adding to the ongoing tragedy of hopelessness; there were 20% more suicides reported...

I posted this on my Facebook about a month ago, but for those of you who didn’t see it there I thought I would share it here as well. This has no connection to my ministry but is a good look at north-eastern Japan 2 months after the disaster, and what God is doing there. A little long in internet-video terms, but worth taking the time to watch, for sure.

June Prayer Letter
Hi everyone,
Reflecting back on the past few months, and looking ahead to the summer, it really seems like this year is moving way too quickly! I’m thankful for the many opportunities God is giving me here, and for your partnership in my ministry through prayers and giving. God is continuing to bless my English ministry, and spiritual bridges are being built. For May’s...

May Prayer Letter
Hi everyone, Thank you for continuing to pray for Japan! This past month has been a time of getting back into “normal” routine after the disruption caused by the earthquake back in March. Here’s an update and some prayer requests: 1. Our English ministry at Immanuel Nagoya Church are going really well. The new kids class now has 12 students, 10 of whom are from outside our...

April Prayer Letter
Thank you for praying for Japan! And thanks for the encouraging messages many of you have sent me in the past few weeks. I haven’t been able to respond to all you individually, but rest assured your emails were read and appreciated. The week following the earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, I went to help out at the CRASH (Christian Relief, Assistance, Support and Hope) Tohoku Relief...

CRASH Report 2
Monday, March 21, 2011:
I’ve been in Tokyo for about a week now, volunteering at the CRASH command center. I feel like my role has been small, but it’s still been a privilege to serve here. Ever since the 11th, I had a huge burden to do something to help those who were suffering in the affected areas.
I ended up doing IT work at CRASH command center. While part of me would much...

CRASH Report
Things are going well, considering we are cramming 2 months work into a few days. I have been basically doing IT work, helping our leaders get set up to communicate with each other, donors and volunteers. I have also been helping with some of the database and website stuff necessary to stay organized and get the word out.
Jonathan Wilson (CRASH founder/director) really knows what he’s...

Tokyo
Well, it was a bit of a challenge getting here, but I’ve safely arrived in Higashi-Kurume, Tokyo. They are scheduling rotating blackouts throughout the city to conserve power, so some of the train lines were not operating. I got within a 2-hour walk or a 30-minute taxi ride, so I opted for the taxi, even though it was ridiculously expensive.
Before deciding to take the taxi, I was going to...

Updated Plans
Hi everyone, I woke up to the news this morning that the Immanuel Church’s annual conference has been canceled.
I am about to hop a bullet train to Tokyo. I’ve been asked to help set up and coordinate communications for the Christian relief group that is setting up their base there. I will still be far from the disaster zone but able to lend some practical help, which is something...

Current Plans
Thanks again, everyone, for all your prayers, notes of encouragement and thoughts during this time. I thought I should post another update, though I don’t feel there’s much new to say at the moment. Here’s a numbered list of what’s going on:
1. It was really good to be with my church family today. We are physically unaffected here in Nagoya but our hearts are heavy and...

Update
Thanks, everyone, for all the prayers and well-wishes. Though physically far from the affected area, this disaster has certainly had an emotional impact, as I’m sure it has on many of you. I’ve been glued to the TV and web for updates, praying for those who are suffering and wishing that I could do something to help. There is a disaster relief group in Japan called CRASH who have been...
Hi everyone, By now most of you have probably heard about the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan today. I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know that I’m OK. We felt the quake here in Nagoya, but it was not strong enough here to cause any damage or injury. In fact, though the building shook for a couple minutes and it was pretty scary, I was able on with my day like...

Devotional Blog →
This week I started yet another blog over at Posterous (follow the above link to go there). It’s got a slightly different purpose than this one (see explanation there) but I’m thinking of integrating the two anyway, since Bible talk and my ministry are obviously connected and it’ll be simpler to maintain one rather than two. Also I just plain like Posterous as a blogging...
February Prayer Letter
Hi everyone, Thank you for your continuing prayers and support this past month. I hope you’ve all been doing well and staying warm. I’ve had a good month getting back into the swing of things after the holidays. Here’s what’s been going on… My weekly English classes are continuing to go well. We now have 10 students in the Wednesday class and 8 in the Saturday...

January Prayer Letter
Hi everyone, Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday season, and thank you for your prayers and support this past month… and year! In December, I started taking private lessons at a new language school, which is going well so far. In addition to my usual English classes, on the 23rd I did some music and testimony at a Christmas event at Immanuel Numazu Church. It is a small...

Pronunciation Postulations
I recently learned an interesting thing about the English and Japanese languages: Japanese has only about 108 distinct sounds, while English has (are you ready?) over 1800!
I’d known for a long time that there were sounds in English that just don’t exist in Japanese, but I didn’t realize just there was that many. This gives me a lot more sympathy for my students as they try to wrap their mouths...
